Markers for Plastic: The Polymer Decides, Not the Word

Plastic is not one surface, it is a category with a dozen members that behave differently, so markers for plastic have to be chosen by finish. A matte 3D print in PLA, a glossy polypropylene tub and a primed styrene model kit take ink in three unrelated ways. This page sorts the verdicts by finish and by job, and separates the model-building half of the cluster.

Plastic is the least well-defined surface in markers for hard surfaces, and that is the whole difficulty. 1,980 people a month search it across 128 phrasings, and the word covers a matte 3D print, a shiny yoghurt tub, a laminated sleeve, a styrene model runner and a powder-coated bin lid. Those five take ink in five different ways.

Finish Beats Polymer

Before the chemistry, one distinction does most of the work: is the surface glossy or matte?

A glossy plastic is smooth at the scale ink cares about. There is nothing for a dye to key into, so solvent ink beads as it dries and pulls itself into stripes, and pigment ink sits as a film held on by nothing but its own adhesion. That is why alcohol markers rate conditional at 270 searches a month with the note that they streak on gloss, and why permanent marker rates conditional at 200 with the note that it adheres but rubs off under friction on smooth polypropylene.

A matte or textured plastic — a 3D print with visible layer lines, a sandblasted enclosure, an unpolished ABS shell — has microscopic tooth. Ink keys into it, and most of the conditional verdicts above turn into workable ones.

The two chemistries that do not care about this distinction are the two rated works. Paint markers sit at 610 searches a month with the note that they adhere to most plastics without primer, and acrylic markers sit at 410 as the standard choice for 3D prints and models. Both lay a pigment film with a binder, and a binder does not need tooth in the way a dye does.

The Model-Building Half of the Cluster

600 of this page's 1,980 searches a month are the single term "gundam markers", with another 40 for "how to use gundam markers" and 40 for "gundam paint markers". Roughly a third of the demand on a page about plastic is about plastic model kits, and model builders want something almost nobody else on this site wants: ink that flows into a groove.

Panel lining is the technique. A kit has recessed lines moulded into it, and running a fine marker along one lets capillary action carry the ink the length of the channel, after which the excess is wiped off the raised surface before it cures. Every other page here treats ink spreading as failure. Here it is the mechanism.

That is also why the alcohol cell reads the way it does. The matrix note — streaks on gloss, works on primed styrene — is a description of exactly this workflow: a primer coat gives the kit a uniform matte surface, and the solvent ink then behaves predictably in the channels instead of beading on the sheen. Skipping the primer is why unprimed panel lining looks blotchy.

For colouring rather than lining, acrylic is the answer, and buyers describe it working on kits directly: "Worked well for a custom model kit I was making for someone else."

3D Prints: Layer Lines Are the Variable

The other identifiable technical group in the corpus is people painting 3D prints, and their reports are unusually specific about material.

I use these to paint 3D printed stuff in PLA. They don’t run, last a long time and the brushes hold their tip for a while even painting rough areas. TRANSON 24 Colors Bold and Brush Dual-tip Acrylic Paint Markers

Flows well on all kinds of surfaces, perfect for dark surfaces. Using it to detail 3D printed models. Writes fine on PLA, PETG prints. Sharpie Metallic Fine Point Permanent Marker

I use these for my 3D prints. Be cautious as they can take quite a while to dry. I get paint transfers long after it should have cured.... Molotow One4All 127HS Acryl Marker Main-Kit 1

Read together, those three describe the real trade. Pigment markers cover a print well and hold up, including on the rough areas that a brush struggles with. What they do slowly is dry, and a print handled too early transfers paint to fingers and to whatever it is set down on. The last quote is the useful one, because it names a failure that arrives long after the buyer thought the job was finished.

Layer lines are the reason. A printed surface is a stack of ridges, so a coat is thicker in the valleys than on the peaks, and the valleys are still soft when the peaks are dry. Sanding the print first shortens drying time as much as it improves the finish.

One buyer working in ABS recorded the other 3D-print complication, which is colour: "not true to cap color, I had to use couple shades to get what i need. Used them to paint ABS plastic after 3d printer". Cap colour and dried colour differ on any pigment marker, and they differ most over a dark or translucent substrate.

Reading Acrylic's Numbers Against Plastic

Two of the four topics above matter more on plastic than anywhere else. Drying time draws 18,854 reports across 241 products with 8,835 negative, and on a non-absorbent surface there is no substrate pulling the solvent out — everything has to evaporate upwards. Expect a plastic mark to stay vulnerable considerably longer than the same mark on paper or wood.

Durability, at 11,085 reports and 51% negative, is the number behind the friction problem. A pigment film on a slick polymer is held by adhesion alone, and adhesion loses to repeated rubbing. If a marked plastic item is going to be gripped in the same place every day, plan on a clear coat over the top or accept that the mark is temporary.

The Polypropylene Problem

One polymer is named directly in the matrix and deserves its own paragraph, because it is the one in almost every kitchen and every storage cupboard. Permanent marker on plastic rates conditional with the note that it adheres but rubs off under friction on smooth polypropylene, and that qualifier is doing a lot of work.

Polypropylene and polyethylene are waxy by nature: they have low surface energy, which is a technical way of saying that liquids do not want to spread on them and coatings do not want to grip them. It is the same property that makes a plastic tub easy to wash and a supermarket bag impossible to write on. Ink laid on those two polymers is sitting on a surface that is actively unhelpful, and adhesion — the thing that makes a mark permanent — is what suffers.

The practical consequences are ordinary and annoying. A date written on a food container in permanent marker survives the fridge and disappears in the dishwasher. A name on a plastic lunchbox lid fades from the middle out, because that is where it is held. A label on a plastic bin reads perfectly until somebody slides the bin along a shelf.

Three fixes work, in ascending order of effort. Use a pigment marker rather than a dye one, since a bound film resists rubbing better than a stain. Write on a surface that is not handled, such as the underside or the inside face of a lid. Or write on a label and stick the label on, which sidesteps the polymer entirely and is why permanent marker on cardboard rates works while permanent marker on plastic does not.

The Cells That Are Not About Objects

Two verdicts in this column describe stationery rather than things. Wet erase markers rate works on plastic with the note that they are excellent on laminated overlays and sleeve protectors, which is the school and office use — a laminated chart written on and wiped weekly. Dry erase rates conditional at 10 searches, and only on a gloss laminate, because matte plastic holds the pigment. Washable rates conditional at 80: it wipes off gloss and stains matte, which is the difference between a high chair tray and a matte toy.

Those three cells are why "will it come off" and "will it stay on" are the same question here with the sign flipped, and why the finish question at the top of this page is the one to settle first.

What Is Not a Pen

Filter the keyword set for "plastic" and a substantial block comes back that has nothing to do with ink. "Plastic wire markers" draws 100 searches a month, "plastic sleeve wire markers" 90, "plastic clip on wire markers" 80, "plastic snap on wire markers" 70 and "plastic pipe markers" 40. Those are label sleeves and clip-on identification tags for cable and pipework — moulded products, not writing instruments. Roughly 380 searches a month in this space are for hardware, and this catalogue holds none of it, so no verdict is offered.

For plastic specifically, nib size should follow the job rather than the object. Panel lining and print detailing want the finest nib available; covering a printed shell wants a broad one, because a large area filled with a fine nib dries in overlapping strips that show. One buyer of a fine-tip set described the loading behaviour that makes fine nibs workable on plastic: "Simple lite press of the tip and paint loads up."

BIC has no acrylic marker in this catalogue that clears the rating and review thresholds, so it does not appear in the table and no BIC verdict is given for plastic.

Frequently Asked

What markers work on plastic?

Acrylic rates works at 410 searches a month as the standard choice for 3D prints and models. Paint rates works at 610, adhering to most plastics without primer. Permanent is conditional at 200 because it rubs off under friction on smooth polypropylene, which is the trap most people hit.

Will permanent marker stay on plastic?

On a matte or textured plastic, largely yes. On smooth polypropylene it rates conditional precisely because it adheres and then rubs off under friction. If the marked area gets handled, gripped or wiped, expect the mark to go grey and then vanish.

What markers are best for 3D prints?

Acrylic, because the matrix names it the standard choice for 3D prints and models. Buyers describe using both acrylic and oil-based pens on PLA, PETG and ABS successfully. Layer lines matter more than polymer: a rough surface soaks up more pigment and needs a second pass.

Do alcohol markers work on plastic?

Conditionally, and the condition is priming. Alcohol on plastic rates conditional at 270 searches a month with the note that it streaks on gloss and works on primed styrene for models. On bare shiny plastic the dye beads into stripes as the solvent flashes off.

Do Posca markers work on plastic?

30 searches a month ask this exactly. Posca is a water-based acrylic paint marker and acrylic rates works on plastic, so yes on most surfaces. One buyer reported using a medium Posca on a custom model kit and it working well. Prime the nib before the first stroke.

How do you use Gundam markers?

40 searches a month ask. The characteristic technique is panel lining: run ink into a recessed line and let capillary action pull it along, then wipe the excess off the raised surface before it cures. It is the one job on this site where you want the ink to flow.
