How We Review Markers

Last updated: 4 September 2026

Most “best markers” articles are one person’s opinion, or worse, a reshuffled list of whatever ranks highest. Ours are built from what buyers actually reported. This page explains exactly how, including what we do not do.

What our verdicts are built from

Source Scale
Verified customer reviews from public product listings 5,201
Structured complaint and praise topics, with verbatim quotes 17,314
Products with full specifications, pricing and rating data 4,486
Keyword and demand data used to decide what to cover 23,280 terms

When we make a claim about a marker, we cite the number of buyers who reported it. “Bleeds through paper” is not our impression — it is 278 separate customers saying so.

The five things we assess

  1. Surface compatibility. Will it work on the surface you actually own? Paper, glass, fabric, skin, wood, plastic, whiteboard. This is the question most articles skip.
  2. Bleed-through. Does the ink pass through the page. The single most common complaint in our review corpus.
  3. Drying time and smudging. How long before you can touch it.
  4. Ink life and durability. Does it dry out in the cap. Does the tip hold its shape.
  5. Value. Cost per marker against how long it lasts, not just the sticker price.

What we do not do

  • We do not accept payment for placement. No brand can buy a ranking or a verdict. See our Affiliate Disclosure.
  • We do not claim to have tested every product. Where our verdict comes from aggregated buyer data rather than our own hands-on use, we label it as such on the page.
  • We do not recommend a product the evidence does not support. Including products from brands that would pay us more.
  • We do not use AI to write our verdicts. AI is used for illustrative imagery, which we disclose — see the Image License.

Where BIC fits

This site is called bicmarkers.com and we cover BIC closely. We are also an independent publication with no affiliation to, sponsorship by, or endorsement from Société BIC.

BIC does not make every kind of marker. It makes no alcohol markers, no Posca-style paint markers, no chalk markers. Where BIC does not compete, we recommend whoever genuinely wins. Where BIC does compete, our own data shows it averages a 4.54 rating at a $11.20 median price against 4.50 at $12.77 for everything else — better rated and cheaper — and we say so.

Corrections

Products change. Formulations change. If we get something wrong, email corrections@bicmarkers.com. We fix errors and date-stamp the change at the foot of the page.

Updates

Every review carries a “last checked” date. Pricing and availability are refreshed automatically; verdicts are re-examined when new review data materially changes the picture.
