Window Markers: Which Ones Wash Off Clean
There is no window row in the compatibility matrix, because a window is glass, and glass is the second-busiest column in the whole grid. Six marker chemistries pass on it, carrying 13,530 searches a month between them, and they differ on exactly one thing that matters here: whether the mark is meant to survive the next rainstorm or be gone by Monday.
Window is the most contested word in the hard surfaces markers by surface root: 17,030 searches a month across 216 keywords at a keyword difficulty of 89, against a difficulty of 0 on almost every other cluster in that root. Part of the reason is that the word covers four different jobs. A house window, a shop window, a car window and a glass whiteboard are all glass, and the person searching for each of them wants a different pen.
Six Chemistries Pass on Glass

Glass is forgiving because it is non-porous: there is nothing for ink to sink into, so almost anything sits on the surface as a film and almost anything can be persuaded to leave again. That is why six types pass. The differences between them are not about whether they mark the glass. They are about how hard it is to remove the mark, and that is a decision you make before you buy rather than afterwards.
The two conditional rows are the ones to be careful with. Permanent marker at 560 searches a month will write on a window and then stay there until somebody takes a blade to it, and it fades outdoors rather than surviving. Alcohol marker at 90 beads as it lands and produces a broken, streaky line, which is the visual signature of ink that does not want to be there.
Which of the Six, and When
Sort by how long the mark has to live and the choice makes itself.
Gone by tomorrow, indoors. Washable window markers, which is what crayola window markers is about at 620 searches a month. They rinse with water and are sold for children drawing on patio doors and mirrors. Expect a cleanup step rather than a wipe: "LOVED THESE...kids loved drawing on the patio doors! Does take a bit of cleaning to completely rid your window of the smears, but super fun!" wrote one buyer. Another, more simply: "These are fun for kids! Works on windows and mirrors and cleans up super easy."
Gone next week, and readable from the street. Liquid chalk, at 3,430 searches a month on glass, which is why chalk window markers exists as its own node. Jumbo 10mm and 15mm nibs, high pigment load, damp cloth to remove. It is the shopfront and seasonal-display standard, and buyers use it commercially: "Easy to use and cleans off well. We use these to put special pricing on golf cart windows."
Permanent, or as close as glass allows. Oil-based paint markers and acrylic markers, at 3,870 and 460 searches a month. These dry to a film that resists water and needs a solvent or a blade to remove. This is the register for a stained-glass effect, a labelled jar, a house number or a sign that is not coming down.
A board, not a window. If the glass in question is a glass dry erase board, dry erase ink is the answer and it is the highest-volume glass cell at 4,280 searches a month. That is a different product tree from everything else on this page.
The bare term window markers at 6,520 searches a month and window paint markers at 1,790 are the two general entry queries, and the second of those is where most of the confusion in this cluster lives, because "window paint marker" is sold by both water-based and oil-based ranges under the same phrase.
Water-Based or Oil-Based Is the Whole Decision
The paint-marker row on glass carries a nine-word condition that decides the outcome of the entire purchase: water-based wipes off, oil-based stays. Nothing else on this page matters as much.
Water-based paint markers, the POSCA class, lay down opaque pigment that dries to a film and lifts with water, glass cleaner or a damp magic sponge. They are the safe choice for anything temporary on glass you own, and they are also what most decorative window ranges actually are.
Oil-based paint markers, the Sharpie oil-based and TFIVE class, are solvent-carried and dry to something closer to enamel. On a window they are effectively permanent and will need acetone or a razor. Buy them deliberately or not at all.
The failure mode people hit is buying the second while intending the first, and it produces the single most quotable report in this cluster: "Writes great. Takes an act of God to get it off the car window. 3 months later and we still have not been able to get it all off the windows." Check the barrel for the words water-based before anything goes on glass you cannot replace.

The most-reviewed entry in the whole paint category is sold explicitly for this surface — a twelve-colour glitter set for glass marking at 32,035 ratings and $9.98, which is 83 cents a pen. Below it sit the POSCA water-based ranges at 4.8 stars, and an oil-based twelve-pack that belongs to the permanent half of the decision above rather than to the temporary half.
Match the nib to the reading distance. Extra-fine and fine points are for jars, labels and detail on a pane you stand next to. Anything meant to be read from a pavement wants a jumbo chisel, and that is a liquid chalk product more often than a paint one.
Preparing the Pane, and Getting It Off Again
Glass looks like a clean surface and is not. It carries a film of grease from hands, cooking, exhaust or whatever the last cleaner left behind, and pigment deposited on grease lifts with the grease. Almost every report of a mark that beaded, streaked or wiped away too easily has that same explanation underneath it. Clean the pane with an alcohol wipe or ordinary glass cleaner, let it dry fully, and only then start.
