Labeling and marking is the only root on this site organised around a job rather than a surface, and it is the smallest, at 330 searches a month across 26 phrasings. The job has one obvious answer, permanent marker, and the interesting part is that it earns a clean pass on only one of the four things people actually label. The other three are conditional.

This is the eighth and smallest root on a site that otherwise sorts every marker matched to its surface. One Answer, Four Substrates

Permanent marker is the answer to labelling. Solvent dye ink bonds to porous surfaces and sits on non-porous ones, dries in seconds, needs no shaking, writes on a vertical surface and does not require anybody to think about it. That is what a labelling pen has to do.

The interesting part is what happens when you check that answer against the four things people in this cluster are actually labelling.

One clean pass and three conditionals. That is an unusual result for a job this simple, and it is why the two pages under this root exist rather than one.

There is a fifth substrate worth naming even though it belongs to another root: metal, where permanent marker rates works at 1,000 searches a month as the classic use. Asset tags, tools and equipment are labelling jobs too, and they are the one place where the answer is unambiguous and durable at the same time.

Laundry Is the Biggest Job Here and the Worst Served

Sort this cluster by volume and the largest single job is not boxes. It is also the conditional with the most demanding condition. That buyer found a general permanent marker outperformed the laundry-specific one on their fabric. One report is not a verdict, and the 57% negative rate across 107 reports is enough to say the category is not solved. Where the mark has to survive washing and stay sharp, a fabric marker with heat setting is the chemistry designed for the job, and the trade-off is at markers for shirts and clothing.

Boxes and Bins: Legibility Beats Permanence

For the box half of this root the failure mode is not the ink coming off. Corrugated cardboard takes permanent marker without argument. The failure is a room full of identical brown boxes and a marker that was too fine to read from the doorway.

Those two reports are about nib width from opposite directions: one buyer wanted the biggest marker available, another found a chisel point awkward to control. Both are describing the same trade. A king-size chisel lays a line readable across a room and is clumsy for a long word; a fine tip writes neatly and is invisible from two metres.

Plastic bins are the harder case and the reason they carry a conditional. A bin gets picked up, slid and stacked, and permanent marker on smooth polypropylene rubs off under exactly that treatment. Three workarounds, in order of effort: write on a surface that does not get handled, use a pigment paint marker instead of dye, or write on a stick-on label so the ink never touches the polymer.

A self-adhesive label is coated paper, often gloss or semi-gloss, which behaves less like paper and more like a thin plastic film — ink sits on the coating rather than soaking in, and stays smearable for noticeably longer.

Permanent marker on paper rates conditional with the note that it bleeds through anything under 100 gsm, and a label is far below that. On a label stuck to a box that rarely matters, because the box is behind it. On a label sheet still in its backing, it matters a great deal.

One buyer described the multi-surface version of this job, working in a hospital: "The thicker side is great for labeling IV bags and the thinner side is great for labeling syringes." Two pens, chosen by how long each piece of information needs to last. The name is permanent because the bottle stays the same bottle. The date is written with something that wipes off because tomorrow it is wrong.

Most labelling frustration is a lifespan mismatch in one direction or the other: permanent ink on something that changes weekly, or wipe-off ink on something that has to survive a house move. Deciding which kind of information you are writing, before choosing the pen, removes almost all of it.

Freezer, Fridge and Damp Surfaces

One small job in this root has a condition none of the four substrates above mention, and it is worth naming because the failure is confusing when it happens. "Freezer markers" draws 20 searches a month, and the problem is temperature and moisture rather than material.

Solvent evaporates more slowly on a cold surface, so a mark made on a bag already in the freezer stays wet, and therefore smearable, far longer than the same mark made on the counter. Condensation is worse: a film of moisture on a chilled bag or tub stops solvent ink reaching the surface at all, and the mark beads into droplets and lifts off with a fingertip.

Both are solved by sequence rather than by product. Label the container while it is dry and at room temperature, then fill and freeze. Nothing about the pen changes the physics.

What This Root Deliberately Excludes

Filter the keyword set for labelling and marking language and a block comes back that is signage rather than stationery. "Grocery store aisle markers" draws 100 searches a month, "store aisle markers" 100 and "aisle markers for grocery stores" 70, with a further 70 for aisle signs and markers for store shelving. Alongside them sit the industrial families named as out of scope site-wide: pipe markers, cable and wire markers, pavement and survey markers.

Those are printed signs, moulded sleeves, reflective posts and stakes. They share the verb — something is being marked so it can be identified — and none of them is a pen. This catalogue holds 4,486 marker listings and none of that hardware, so no verdict is offered on any of it.

That exclusion is what keeps this root at 330 searches a month rather than a more impressive-looking number. Counting demand this site cannot serve would make the root look larger and make the answer worse.

Two things about this table are worth reading against the labelling job specifically. The per-pen figures here are among the lowest of any type on the site, which is why labelling is the one category where buying a box rather than a pen is straightforwardly correct. And the drying-out complaint that dominates permanent-marker reports — 1,365 mentions at 76% negative — is exactly the failure a box of labelling pens invites, because they sit in a drawer between uses.
