Read that by price per pen and the 36-count chisel box is the outlier at $0.62 each, against $1.12 for the four-count chisel and $1.50 for the ultra-fine four-count. Two of those reports name the cause rather than the symptom. "cap (it fit, but too loosely so it let air in) leading to a dried out marker," wrote one buyer of a chisel assorted pack. Another: "On top of that, this may be old old stock. They are completely dried out and you can't return them because Amazon considers them flammable." The second one is a distribution problem rather than a manufacturing one, and it is the reason a 36-count box is a gamble in a way a four-count is not.

Durability runs to 4,509 reports across 62 products with 2,222 negative, a 49% rate, and the split in it is a term rather than a day. "They last a long time, don’t dry out quickly (even when a cap is left off for a little too long during a busy lesson!)," reads one classroom report on a black chisel. Against it: "This 12 pack of markers dried out just after the return window expired." Buying black in a 36-count box concentrates that risk into one order, which is the trade for $0.62 a pen.

Ink quality adds 332 reports at 45% negative, and one line in it is the whole argument for buying black: "Brand new straight out of the pack and you can barely see the ink." The counts by type sit at 18,792 buyer reports on erasability.
