Read that column and the pattern is not about brand or price. It is about whether the pigment is carried in something the paper can absorb. Acrylic and paint markers put a film on top of the fibre and dry there. Alcohol and permanent markers put dye into a solvent that fibre pulls in and spreads. The three flat fails are the three inks formulated to stay removable on a surface that cannot absorb anything, and paper defeats all of them for the same reason: it absorbs, so there is nothing to lift the mark off.

Notice which cell carries the most demand. It is not one of the four that work. Alcohol on paper, at 1,820 searches a month, is a conditional verdict, and those 1,820 searches are the largest block of people on this root. They own the pens already. What they are hunting is the sheet.

Bleed, Ghosting and Feathering Are Three Different Failures

Search demand treats these as one word and they are not. Separating them is the single most useful thing this root does, because the fix for each is different and two of the three are not the marker's fault.

Bleed-through is ink physically crossing to the back of the sheet and marking whatever is underneath. It is a volume problem: too much wet ink for the stock to hold. It gets worse with every layer, which is why blending is where alcohol markers fail first.

Ghosting is seeing the image faintly from the reverse without ink having crossed. It is an opacity problem in the paper, not a chemistry problem in the pen. Thin sheets ghost with any saturated ink, including the four types that rate works. Nothing you buy in a pen will fix it. Heavier stock will.

Feathering is the line spreading sideways along the fibres, so a 0.5 mm nib lays down a 1 mm line with fuzzy edges. It ruins lettering and fine detail long before anything reaches the back of the page. It is a sizing problem: uncoated, unsized paper wicks. This is why permanent marker on bare wood carries the same warning as permanent marker on cheap copier paper. Grain is grain.

Buyers describe all three and rarely name them correctly. One report on a 60-colour water-based set filed under colour selection reads: "The colors don't match the lids. Marker tips are fat/frayed. Colors bleed and make the paper soggy & fuzzy. Completely ruined my new $30 BuJo." Soggy is bleed. Fuzzy is feathering. The two arrived together because the stock was wrong for the ink, and the buyer paid for the journal, not the pens.

The counts back this up. Across the five marker types that carry a bleed-resistance topic at all, the corpus holds 12,911 buyer reports and 7,556 of them are negative. Alcohol markers own more than half: 6,757 reports across 138 products, 4,407 negative. Acrylic markers, the type that rates works on paper, carry 2,646 reports across 81 products with 1,134 negative, the lowest negative share of the five. Permanent sits at 1,624 across 52 products, fabric at 1,465 across 25, and paint at just 419 across 17.

Two types carry no bleed topic at all. Washable and dot markers each have eight recorded topics and bleeding is not among them, because water-based dye at low saturation on absorbent paper is the exact pairing both were engineered around. Four Questions This Root Answers

The four pages below split the demand cleanly. Two are about the pen, one is about the sheet, and one is about a specific book that is thinner than anything else people write in on purpose.

The Stock Is Half the Answer

The largest page under this root is not about markers at all. Paper for markers carries 5,260 searches a month across 379 keywords, and its own biggest term is "best paper for alcohol markers" at 400. That is the 1,820-search conditional cell, resolved. A coated, heavily sized marker sheet holds alcohol dye at the surface long enough to blend without letting it pass, and the difference between that and copier paper is larger than the difference between a $20 marker set and a $60 one. Even then it is not automatic: one buyer of a branded marker pad wrote, "Unfortunately, the markers bleed through the paper, which it specifically states on the paper it is not supposed to do. The Pens That Do Not Bleed at All

The opposite approach is to change the pen instead of the paper, and 1,510 searches a month across 82 keywords take it. This is where the four works cells earn their place: acrylic and paint markers lay an opaque film that has nowhere to go but sideways on the surface, and washable dye is too dilute to travel. The trade is control. A pigment film is not blendable the way alcohol dye is, and on thin paper it will still buckle the sheet if you flood it. Journals and Planners Have a Second Requirement

Journal markers draw 1,390 searches a month across 143 keywords, and the buyer here has a constraint the sketchbook buyer does not: the back of every page is also a page. Bleed does not just ruin the sheet under it, it halves the book. That changes the calculus, because a marker that ghosts is tolerable and a marker that bleeds is not. Bible Paper Is a Different Material

Bible markers carry 1,070 searches a month across 27 keywords, which is the highest demand per keyword of any page on this root by a wide margin: 27 phrasings doing the work of 143. That concentration is a signal. Almost everyone asking wants the same thing, and it is not a brand. Bible paper is thinner and more transparent than anything else people write in deliberately, so ghosting is guaranteed and bleed is the only variable left to control. What the Ink Is Carried In Decides Everything

Three chemistries account for nearly all the traffic that reaches this root from elsewhere, and each behaves on paper exactly as its carrier predicts.

Alcohol markers are the largest type cluster on the site. The alcohol solvent is thin on purpose, because thin is what lets two colours melt into each other on the page. Thin also travels. That is not a manufacturing defect and no brand has solved it, which is why the conditional verdict names the stock rather than a product. Alcohol markers also carry a separate topic labelled bleed-through, distinct from bleed resistance: 1,207 reports across 17 products, 985 of them negative. Acrylic markers do the opposite. Water-based pigment with a binder dries to a film, and a film cannot wick. Acrylic is the only chemistry with a works verdict on paper, chalkboard, glass, wood, metal, plastic, rock and cardboard at once, and paper is where that opacity is most visible: it is the type that shows on black card, which is what 570 searches a month are actually asking about. The 570 is not a bleed question. It is a coverage question wearing a bleed question's clothes.

Dry erase markers are the instructive failure. 300 searches a month ask whether they work on paper, and the answer is no, for a reason that has nothing to do with bleeding. Dry erase ink contains an oily release agent whose entire job is to stop pigment bonding. On melamine that leaves a mark you can wipe off dry. On paper there is nothing to release from, so it smears, never dries, and transfers to the next thing that touches it. A type can fail a surface by being too permanent or by being too temporary, and this is the second kind.

The Four Works Cells, Ranked by What They Cost You

A works verdict is not a recommendation. It means the ink is formulated for the surface, and nothing more. The four types that clear paper differ enormously in what they take away in exchange, and the catalogue sizes them very differently too.

Acrylic is the deepest bench on the site: 570 products at a median price of $15.33 and a median rating of 4.6. It is also the type that gives you black card, and it is the one with a real cost attached, because a pigment film does not blend after it dries and cannot be layered lightly. Paint markers are the cheaper cousin at 260 products, a $11.89 median and 4.5 stars, and on paper they behave almost identically; the difference shows up on the other twelve surfaces, not this one. Washable is 96 products at $14.54 and 4.7 stars, the highest median rating of any type in the catalogue, and it earns that rating by being deliberately weak: dye dilute enough to come out of a shirt is dye dilute enough to sit on a page. Dot markers are 78 products at a $19.99 median, the second most expensive of the eleven types behind alcohol at $21.36, for a sponge applicator that puts a 15 mm circle on the page and nothing else.

So the ranking depends entirely on what you are doing. For black card and lettering the answer is acrylic and the cost is that mistakes are permanent. For a child at a kitchen table the answer is washable and the cost is that the colour is pale. For toddlers it is dot markers and the cost is that they only work on paper and cardboard, two cells out of thirteen. There is no single winner in this column, and any page that names one is picking a use case without telling you.

Where the Demand Actually Sits

552 keywords is a small vocabulary for 8,270 searches, and the shape of it is worth reading before you read any product list. The largest terms are not brand searches. They are descriptions of a symptom.

"Markers that don't bleed through paper" carries 350 searches a month on its own, "no bleed markers" 250 and "non bleed markers" another 150. Three phrasings of one question, 750 searches, and not a manufacturer named in any of them. Below that, "markers for black paper" is 150 and "markers that show up on black paper" is 60, which is the acrylic opacity question again. "Journaling markers" is 150, "bullet journal markers" 80, "best markers for journaling" 70 and "best markers for bullet journal" another 70. "Bible page markers" is 150.

Two things follow from that shape. The first is that almost nobody arriving here knows which chemistry they want, which is why this root leads with a column of the matrix rather than a shortlist. The second is that the branded searches on this root are thin and specific: "paper mate markers" at 200 and "papermate markers" at 100 are effectively one term for one product line, and they are a felt-tip pen question rather than a bleed question. There is one more variable nobody prints: how many passes. Bleed is cumulative.
