Markers That Don't Bleed: Three Failures, One Word

Markers that don't bleed is one phrase covering three unrelated failures. Ink passing through to the next sheet is bleed-through. Ink spreading sideways into a fuzzy edge is feathering. Ink visible as a shadow without breaking the surface is ghosting. Different chemistries fail in different ways, and this page ranks all of them by the rate at which buyers actually complained.

Three Failures Sharing One Word

Before ranking anything, the word has to be split, because a pen that solves one of these can make another worse.

Bleed-through is vertical. The ink passes through the sheet and appears on the reverse, or on the page beneath. It is caused by more solvent than the paper can hold, and it is a function of paper weight above all. Why Acrylic Wins the Paper Column

The chemistry is simpler than that. Acrylic is pigment held in a binder, and a bound pigment film sits on the sheet rather than soaking into it. The third quote is the caveat that keeps this from being a clean win. A pigment marker that floods — because it was over-primed, or because the nib is broad and the stroke slow — puts down enough liquid to wet a sheet through. Acrylic resists bleed because it carries little solvent, not because it carries none, and a puddle is a puddle.

Those two BIC reports are the honest pair, and this site is named after the brand, so both belong here. One buyer found the fine point wider than expected and bleeding through 20 lb paper, which is roughly 75 gsm and below the 100 gsm threshold in the matrix note. When "No Bleed" Is a Claim on the Paper

The phrase people search is a property they want, and it gets printed on packaging at both ends of the transaction — on pens and on pads. One buyer bought a pad from a marker manufacturer on exactly that promise:

Bleed-proof marker pads are usually designed to stop ink reaching the next sheet, often with a barrier layer, rather than to keep it on the front face of the one you are drawing on. Both behaviours can be described as "no bleed" by somebody being economical with the truth, and the disappointment above is what that ambiguity produces.

Three cells in the paper column avoid the whole argument by failing for other reasons. Two selection rules matter more than brand for this specific problem. Choose the finest nib that will do the job, because line width and delivered ink volume rise together. And test on the actual paper before committing, on the back page rather than the front, since the same pen crosses the bleed threshold on one notebook and not on another.

BIC does not appear in this table, having no acrylic marker in the catalogue that clears the rating and review thresholds.
